This makes sense. I can see a number of registries making use of such
a record to indicate that the delegation isn't active any more, because
a domain

* has expired
* was removed by court order
* was deleted due to missed payment
* ...

(A digression...)

That is what WhoIs or IRIS is for. The DNS should neither be a database nor a database inspection tool. It's just a lookup protocol.
