Ed,
I applaud your efforts in this area (both now, and in the past). It's
much needed, and very unappreciated work.
Forgive me if this is premature, but I'd like to move toward a more
concrete recommendation for IANA, whether it would require a draft or
not. For example, for the WKS record:
TYPE value and meaning Reference
---------- -------------------------------------- ---------
DEPRECATED 11 Reserved, formerly WKS [IANA] [1]
And then add a note that says something to the effect of, [1] 'All RRs
with type "DEPRECATED" are subject to reallocation if all other code
points are exhausted.'
Donald is right in saying that we're not in any danger of running out,
but I think if we're going to clean up this space, let's make sure we
make our intentions clear to the future generations.
If the consensus is that we will need a draft to update this stuff,
I'd be glad to assist.
